Byron’s journey from the depths of addiction to a life of faith and purpose offers a powerful testament to the transformative power of God’s grace and the importance of community in the healing process.

Byron’s early life was shaped by circumstances beyond his control. Born to a mother struggling with addiction, he was adopted as a baby by his aunt and uncle. Despite these challenges, he grew up in a stable and nurturing environment. “I had a great childhood. It wasn’t anything elaborate, but it had everything I needed,” Byron reflects. Yet, as he entered his teenage years, he began to feel like an outcast. The desire to belong drew him into the world of substance abuse, which led him down a path that would define the next two decades of his life.

The Reality of Addiction

One night around 3 a.m., while searching his friend’s garage for drug remnants, Byron had an epiphany. “I found myself crawling around on the floor … and something just came to me when I was down there: ‘This is not you. This is not who you are. You’re better than this.’” It was a moment of clarity amidst the darkness.

Although Byron realized how far he had fallen, it was difficult to break free. Addiction had a hold on him, and his situation only grew worse with time. He overdosed on prescription drugs, and when he regained consciousness in the hospital, he was faced with a stark reality: his life was falling apart. His family had distanced themselves, and he felt utterly alone. “I really don’t know,” Byron responded when a nurse asked him about his plans for the future. “I’ve squandered everything.”

A New Beginning

Byron was introduced to a local rehabilitation facility in Anniston where he would take his first step toward recovery. Over the next year, he worked to rebuild his life through therapy and participation in the program. He also met Daniel Hughes, a counselor at the rehab center, who would play a key role in his transformation. After graduating from the program, Byron stayed in the area, found work, and began to re-establish some semblance of stability. But recovery was not a straight path. He experienced setbacks, including a few slip-ups, but each mistake was met with a renewed commitment to his healing process.

Finding Purpose at 7 Springs

It was through a friend that Byron learned Daniel Hughes was starting a new ministry in Oxford. Recognizing an opportunity to be part of something larger than himself, Byron reached out to Daniel and was welcomed into the ministry with open arms. This marked the beginning of Byron’s involvement with 7 Springs.

For the past 10+ years, Byron has been an integral part of the ministry. Through his work and involvement, he has found not only a sense of belonging but also a renewed sense of purpose. “I wouldn’t change it for the world,” he says with gratitude. His faith has deepened, and he has gained a new perspective on life.

“The things that used to define me—material things like my job, my income, my car, the clothes I wore—don’t define me anymore,” he says. “I’ve never felt so content with so little in my whole life.”

Byron’s spiritual growth has also led him to a deeper understanding of his relationship with God. No longer does he see God as someone to call upon only in times of crisis. “I don’t look at my relationship with God as when I need Him, I call on Him. I realize today that I need Him every day. Not just the ‘911 prayers’ I lived off of all my life.”

The Power of Gratitude

Byron’s recovery has also taught him the importance of gratitude, especially in moments of hardship. “Every mountaintop has a valley,” he says, reflecting on the ups and downs of life. “We have to praise Him just as much in the valley and be just as grateful and thankful as we do when we’re on the mountaintops.” His ability to find peace in the midst of challenges is a testament to the transformative power of faith and the strength that comes from perseverance.
