There’s no story that is too far gone for God’s redemption. Each testimony shared by our recovery residents reminds us of the power of hope, healing and second chances. Jaylan’s journey is one of those stories—a powerful testament to how God can take brokenness and transform it into purpose.
Jaylan grew up with a supportive family and graduated from high school, but found herself drifting down a dark path. “I’m not sure at what point in my life I made a turn,” she reflects. Her struggles began in the aftermath of a toxic relationship, which led her to seek happiness in pills. “I wanted to be happy by any means, so I took it upon myself to be happy,” she said.
What started as an escape quickly spiraled into addiction, jail time and a life that felt completely off track. “At first it was fun, but then it took a wrong turn,” Jaylan shared. “I started doing things I wouldn’t normally do. I started going to jail … I didn’t come to family events anymore …”
While in jail, Jaylan reached a turning point. “I knew that I needed help, but I just wasn’t going to take it upon myself.” Her mother submitted an application to Esther House on her behalf, and that simple act of faith opened the door to a brand-new beginning.
Rebuilding Her Life on a Firm Foundation
Jaylan entered Esther House with determination. “I came in with my mind focused. I knew what I wanted, so it wasn’t hard.” Through the Christ-centered program, she began to rebuild her life on a firm foundation. “I’ve gotten my relationship better with God. I’ve gotten closer to Him. I’ve learned to stop and listen to Him instead of just trying to take stuff into my own hands.”
Esther House gave Jaylan more than just a place to stay. It provided consistency and spiritual renewal. “This place has taught me structure, and I can apply that when I leave,” she said. “Usually I would jump from job to job. I wouldn’t stick with a job. But now I’ve learned to stay consistent in everything I do.”
Jaylan’s advice to other women struggling with addiction or self-defeating cycles is simple yet profound: “Slow down and let God lead you. Don’t try to take it into your own hands. It’ll never go how you want it to go … Trust God’s timing.”
