We all go through seasons when we are tired and just want to get away from it all. We may think we can take a break from our relationship with the Lord or our calling, but the truth is, outside of the presence of God, there is no rest.

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” (Isaiah 26:3)

When take our focus off of the Lord, we begin to drift. Days come and go, and we start to feel as if we’re wandering through life aimlessly. When you drift, you go where life takes you. Following God requires a conscious effort.

The ways we choose to “take a break” are often more exhausting than if we just kept moving forward in our God-given calling. We want to shut off our minds, so we find activities that allow us to escape. Whether it’s smoking, drinking, social media, crossword puzzles or something else, we look for ways to tune out. Drifting looks different for different people, but whether you’re an alcoholic or a workaholic, the problem is the same. One of satan’s most effective tactics against humanity is to get us to slowly drift away from our faith.

Hebrews 5:11 talks about how we can become “dull of hearing.” When you are not obedient to the Lord or if you’re not pursuing Him intentionally, you will begin to have trouble hearing him. That’s when you will start losing your faith, because faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17).

“We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.” (Hebrews 2:1)

Surrender yourself to the Lord and find the call of God. Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish …” God has a specific plan and purpose for you. He wants to redeem the time you’ve wasted. If you feel like your drifting has caused you to miss out on your calling, trust that God’s grace can restore what is lost. Turn back to Him today and step into the destiny He has prepared for you!
