The 7 Springs dance team is back! After a brief hiatus, we are excited to offer dance therapy once again to our recovery residents.
The American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) defines dance/movement therapy as “the psychotherapeutic use of movement to promote emotional, social, cognitive, and physical integration of the individual, for the purpose of improving health and well-being.” As Christ-followers, we also believe that dance is an expression of praise to the Lord.
A recent performance at Word Alive International Outreach showcased the song “Grave Clothes” featuring Jessica Hitte & Montel Moore. The choreography depicted the heavy burdens we carry and the freedom that comes from running to Jesus and embracing the abundant life He offers. Watch it now:
Dance is mentioned throughout the Bible as a form of worship to God. Here are a few key verses from Scripture that demonstrate the value of dancing before the Lord as an act of thanksgiving and celebration:
“Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the LORD with all his might, while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the LORD with shouts and the sound of trumpets.” (2 Samuel 6:14-15)
“You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. Lord my God, I will praise you forever.” (Psalm 30:11-12)
“I will build you up again, and you, Virgin Israel, will be rebuilt. Again you will take up your timbrels and go out to dance with the joyful.” (Jeremiah 31:4)
“Then young women will dance and be glad, young men and old as well. I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.” (Jeremiah 31:13)
Dance is both expressive and functional. It engages the mind, body and spirit to promote healing and help us connect with our Creator. No matter who you are, you can dance for God and use movement to work through your trials.
